Are You Satisfied as a Business Owner?

Before becoming a business owner, many of us worked for other people. It may have been in a small company or in a large corporation. There may have been times when you were asked about feeling satisfied in your job. Now as a business owner, have you asked yourself that question?

Job Satisfaction is for Business Owners Too!

When we started our own businesses, we did it for many reasons. One of those reasons was that we thought that we would be by far happier and more satisfied not working for someone else.

But for some of us, that happiness may have been short lived, while for the rest of us we are still feeling happy. So before I really jump into today’s topic, I want you to think about your previous job or jobs.

Before becoming a business owner, many of us worked for other people in small businesses or in large corporations. In those previous jobs, there was at least one time when you had to complete a survey about how satisfied your were in your job or maybe you were asked about your level of satisfaction during a performance review.

Now as a business owner or founder, have you asked yourself about how satisfied you are feeling in your job?

This is a question that we need to be asking ourselves and it doesn’t matter if it is only you in your business or you and a team of employees. Just like how your level of satisfaction impacted you in your previous jobs, it will impact you in your current job as a business owner. The thing to consider is if you want it to have a positive or a negative impact!

What is Job Satisfaction?

So the satisfaction that I am talking about is job satisfaction. Yes, it still matters for us even though we are running our own companies.

But what is job satisfaction?

By the way, it is not just about the amount of money that you make. If it was, many of us would have stayed in our previous jobs that were paying us much better and gave us amazing benefits! But we didn’t because we did not find the job to be satisfying plus some other things that we did not like when working for someone else.

So what is job satisfaction?

In 1967, a group of researchers developed a job satisfaction assessment and determined that job satisfaction results from when an “employee’s intrinsic individual needs and extrinsic reinforcer system in the work environment (Weiss et al., 1967).”

This means that when our desires are being met and reinforced in our work environment, we are much more likely to be happy with what we are doing. Think of it as when you are doing the things that you want to be doing and gaining several benefits while doing them. Yes, money could be one of those benefits.

Why Should You Care About Being Satisfied as a Business Owner?

The reason why you should be asking yourself if you are satisfied as a business owner is because if you are not, your productivity is going to be low and you are less likely to meet the goals that you set out for your business.

If you are not satisfied in your own company, you ware less likely to attract the qualified and skilled talent that you need to continue improving and growing your company.

When you are not satisfied in your own company, your customers can tell. Actually, you are likely to decrease your chances of gaining new customers if they see that you are lacking passion and enthusiasm about your own company!

When you are satisfied in your company, your potential referral partners can tell and they are more likely to want to work with you and refer clients and customers to you.

When you are satisfied as a business owner in your own company, you will see your revenue increasing. This is because you are being productive and executing the actions that matter for your company. Those actions that are related to your vision, mission, values and your overall strategic plan. You are motivated and your team members are likely to feel motivated as well. This in turn can lead to increased revenue.

Granted there are other factors that are included in increasing your revenue, but being satisfied in your job is great way to help you increase your revenue.

Ultimately, when you are satisfied in your job, your quality of work improves. As business owners, that would help us to continue to grow our businesses so that we can be around for more than 5 years!

So, are you satisfied as a business owner?

If you are not, then ask yourself, am I in the right business?
